![]() ranging between 6”-12” and above 12” constitute 16% and 12% of all pipes installed, respectively. This suggests that the utility market is by far the largest application of HDD, and can be as the industry’s “bread and butter”. In the maxi-size category, the survey revealed that 47% were custom-built, 40% produced by American Augers Inc., and the balance manufactured by others.Īnalysis of the type and diameter of pipes installed by the respondents during the 1995-96 construction season revealed that 72% of all products installed have an outside diameter (O.D.) of 4” or smaller. (“Ditch Witch”), and American Augers Inc. Vermeer Manufacturing Co., The Charles Machine Works, Inc. Seventy-three percent of the mini and midi size rigs were manufactured by three outfits, namely From these, 38% can be classified as mini-size rigs, 33% as midi size rigs, and 29% as maxi-size rigs. The 49 contractors that responded to the survey owned a total of 185 drilling rigs. ![]() Most HDD outfits can be described as non-specialty contractors with 41% involved in both the utility market and the pipeline industry, while 35% are involved in three or more different applications. ![]() Environmental applications of directional drilling are relatively new as only 28% of the outfits indicated having experience with the installation of horizontal wells and 17% in projects involving horizontal sampling. Nearly 90% of the outfits surveyed indicated that they were involved in the utility industry, in comparison to 74% in the municipal market and 63% in the pipeline industry. Topics investigated include: typical company profiles bidding and estimating practices types of projects conducted productivity and possible areas of future research.Īn analysis of the survey results revealed that 60% of contractors surveyed are relatively small outfits with annual revenues of up to seven millions dollars (U.S.). This paper presents the results obtained from analyzing 49 survey responses from HDD contractors in the United States and Canada. An industry survey was conducted in order to gain a better understanding of this multi-billion dollar industry, which is relatively unfamiliar to many in the construction sector. Applications of horizontal directional drilling span across the civil engineering spectrum from mineral and oil exploration to the installation of telecommunication lines. Currently, in North America alone, there are 17 manufacturers of HDD rigs and accessories and several hundred dedicated horizontal directional drilling contractors. Perhaps the fastest growing segment in the underground trenchless construction industry is Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD). Overall, the survey opens a window into the Horizontal Directional Drilling industry, providing valuable information regarding: technology capabilities limitations and applications characteristics of the industry and the outfits which provide the service and the risks and concerns that a contractor faces when performing HDD installations. As for consultants and owners, the information included in the report may prove invaluable as the statistics regarding productivity and installation costs can be used for obtaining budgetary figures and constructing preliminary schedules. Manufacturers can greatly benefit from the sections dealing with industry needs and typical problems encountered during directional drilling projects. Additionally, contractors can learn from the collective experience of others when attempting to enter a new field such as environmental installations. The information provided in the report is intended to enable HDD contractors to benchmark themselves in comparison with industry statistics. The following report was prepared for contractors, manufacturers, owners, consultants, and others involved in Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) projects.
